‘I’ve never laughed so much’ and ‘my sides are aching’ applies to the District 2017 Quiz. Not because of the compere’s repartee; but she was very good. Chairman Di is never short of a witty word or two, and very eloquently kept the room entertained, waiting with baited breath for each question to be read out.
So, what did we laugh at so much? We laughed, at what can only be called our own stupidity. Everything just seemed to get funnier the more we were certain we had the answers right; and yet were so far from correct it was incredible.
Who knew in the geography round – To which country do the Faroe Islands belong? We were adamant we had this right and looked on with utter disgust when we heard the answer read out. Apparently, the Faroe Islands is a self-governing archipelago, part of the Kingdom of Denmark. We ‘Gloria’s Gals’ thought they were in the Falkland Islands and wanted to know who moved them. Shame we got that wrong as we really needed the points at this stage!
Whilst we’re at it let’s introduce your Warsop Wonder teams for the evening. Ruth. Lesley, Elaine and Christine AKA Gloria’s Gals; and Gloria, Lynne and Ann were Team Glorious. Clearly more studious than the former team who giggled through most of the quiz!!
42 teams of 4 (or 3 in some cases) gathered at the Post Mill in South Normanton. We were highly delighted to find on our tables sandwiches, cake, chocolate and crisps. Very nice they were too. We’d like to say a big thank you to Mr ‘He who must be obeyed’ Hylton for donating the gorgeous chocolate cup sweets from his Christmas stash. Chairman Di said he’d had too many and we needed them more. We agree. Thanks HWMBO they were great!
We have to say a great big Innerwheel thank you to our wonderful runners and markers for the evening. Our runner collected our papers after each of the eight rounds and delivered them to our specific markers who were all members of the exec committee. We hope next year Warsop may do better in the end results as we may or may not have an advantage, having two members of the club on the committee – only joking!
So to the quizzle – After round one Gloria’s Gals were in third place; not a bad start. From then onwards, everything went down hill and the more we got wrong the more we laughed. The picture round and the logo rounds were our highest point scorers. Be we laughed, when the answer to the Timberland Logo was given as the table behind us shouted ‘That was that bloomin tree’.
The food round has to be one of our favourites. We had thought the general knowledge was going to be, but we didn’t know any of the answers. So in a Bruce Forsyth styli we chose the food round as our favourite.
Each of the food round questions were cryptic, with the answers being a food. The example Di gave was ‘bulk up’. So with confidence we said it must be fibre and sat back in our chairs thinking ‘bring it on. We’ve nailed this round’. But the answer was ‘Beef’!!!! Why? because if you bulk up, you are a beef cake.. get it… beef. No we didn’t either. But we found that hysterical.
The winners of the quizzle were the Sutton Skiers after a nail biting tie breaker. In second place were the Ravenshead Rebels. Well done ladies. We hope you had as much fun as we did coming 12th and 20th.
We managed to catch a few photographs of Diann, District Editor at work. Diann said this will be the last District Quiz she will be taking photos at in her official capacity. She, as always, did a marvellous job and looked fabulous dashing around the room with her bright smile and equally bright top.
The evening ended with hugs and congratulations to all. Two of our members were first time attendees of the quiz, but have promised it was such a good night, they will be back for more next year.
